A fascinating and absorbing biography of Lord Mountevan's eventful military career. In 1957,The Times wrote of Admiral Lord Mountevans of Chelsea that he was `perhaps the naval officer whose name was more widely known to the public than any other of his generation'.In the Royal Navy fame is not the spur.'Evans of the Broke' could not have avoided fame had he tried. He did not require to seek publicity; his personal magnetism attracted it.His experiences as second-in-command of Captain Scott's ill-fated Antarctic expedition made him a glamorous figure to the Edwardians. His dashing destroyer action in the Channel in 1917 heightened his heroic stature. When, two years after the war,he gained the only Gold Medal awarded by Lloyds for life-saving at sea,he was hailed as the bravest man of his generation. Successively Commander-in-Chief,Australia, Commander-in-Chief,South Africa, and Commander-in-Chief,the Nore, when the Second World War came he was a Regional Commissioner with paramount powers over Civil Defence in London. In 1940,he was sent by Churchill on a one-man mission to Norway to convey information and reassurance to King Haakon and his Government, then in hiding from the Nazis.Resuming his Civil Defence duties,he soon became one of the most popular figures in the wartime London scene. His tireless energies during the bombings caused him to be known as 'Evans of the Blitz'.Lord Mountevans's exceptional gifts of friendship and his sympathy with the young were characteristics that enriched his life and made his personality attractive to people of every rank and all classes. The story of his eventful career is told in full in this vivid and extremely readable biography by Reginald Pound, who is well-known for his lives of Arnold Bennett,Sir Alfred Munnings, and (in collaboration with Geoffrey Harmsworth) of Lord Northcliffe.
