County Durham evolved in that part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, between Tyne and Tees, which became the county palatine of the conquering Normans. At its heart still stands the world's greatest Norman cathedral. It houses the shrine of the North's best-loved saint, Cuthbert, and the tomb of the Venerable Bede, whose monastery at Jarrow was once the intellectual centre of Europe.Since Bede's day, the ancient county palatine has had a rich and varied history, recounted vividly in this new book (then 1990) which deals with the entire historic county as it existed for a thousand years until the boundary changes of 1974. South of Hadrian's Wall, the county was for some four hundred years on the frontier of the Roman Empire. This was followed by a slightly longer period when the Anglo-Saxons invaded the exposed east coast, which was later harried by the Vikings, whose longships brought terror up the Tyne,Wear and Tees. The hand of the Church dominated the mediaeval county, which became known as the 'Land of the Prince Bishops'.Green villages survive from the Middle Ages, contrasting with the former pit villages of the 19thC,when the Durham coalfield was the most important in England.Exploitation of coal gave rise to the world's first railways and to leading ship-building towns. The inter-war years brought a collapse of fortune highlighted in the Jarrow March, followed by further decline after the war as worked-out pits closed and the old heavy industries became uncompetitive. However, the present day has seen the restoration of scarred landscapes as well as the creation of New Towns and entirely new industries. At the same time the past has been re-evaluated and aspects preserved or recaptured, most notably in the North of England open air museum. That increased awareness of County Durham's historic heritage makes the appearance of this perceptive new account both timely and welcome.
