The design mimics the "Tomorrow's Man" physique magazine (which Andy Warhol, among many others, patiently and meticulously collected, discovering Joe Dallesandro in the process), with a brilliant twist: All of the models who have posed nude for Pierson are legitimate supermodels, of fashion and magazine pictorials, whereas the real Tomorrow's Man models were not. They were, in fact, often underground figures who were hustlers, even criminals (albeit handsome). It is visible proof, if it were needed, of mainstream acceptance of male nudity and overtly homoerotic content. The nudes are juxtaposed with "bleed" color photographs of Pierson's work in other media (still lifes, installations, sculptures, and abstract paintings) that are all beautifully reproduced. Being born to be an artist and to take photographs happened at a very young age in Pierson's case. He became an established artist with a loyal following in his early 20's, a rare occurrence in the ruthless and highly competitive art world. The artist/photographer's nudes evoke masculine beauty in a way that is redolent of memory, the passage of time, and ultimately, mortality. Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson are often compared to each other, and they are indeed kindred spirits. But while Goldin's images are powerfully raw and gritty, Pierson's are serene, contemplative, and lyrical even (or perhaps, especially) at their saddest.
