The first issue in very dark green smooth cloth, blind rulkes to boards and gilt rules and titles to spine. A near fine copy, having a very short pressure split to head spine else clean and tight and virtually unread. A fine family inscribed presentation/association copy "with much love & wishing you many happy returns of your birthday, I send you my Jack's book!. Queenie. Camberley May 25. 33". Although christened Harry St. John Bridger, Philby was well-known by the nickname "Jack" to his family and close friends. We have not been able to establish whether Queenie was a nickname of his wife Dora, or his mother: the book is dedicated jointly to them, and from the nature of the inscription one is drawn to conclude that this can only be one of the two. This copy was obtained from a relative of the Philby family, who also shared relationship to Field Marshal Montgomery.
