Two original letters, typed or printed in black ink on light beige paper. Both letters datelined 1924 in Sacramento, California. 8 1/2" x 11." Three pages (one letter is two pages; the other is one page). Letters are very clean and intact overall except for horizontal lines at center, some wrinkling, and tiny closed tears at the edges. Very Good copies. One letter is by Superintendent Charles C. Hughes, who introduces the accompanying enclosed letter by Roy N. Phelan. In his letter, District Manager Roy N. Phelan writes to "members of the Teaching Profession" about his "Better Home Lighting Contest" aimed toward students at least 10 years of age up to the fourth year of high school. The purpose of the contest was to improve the public's eye health based on the belief that low light or improper light placement damages eyesight. One of the eleven grand prizes of the contest was a custom-made $15,000.00 "electrical home" outfitted with electrical lighting. The other ten grand prizes were scholarships ranging from $300 to $1200. In order to be eligible to win in the contest, students were asked to write "a 600-word essay and ... show the proper location of the electrical fixtures for a home." Phelan asks that teachers read his announcement in the letter to their students.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
