UK,12mo wraps,Ltd.,1st edns+s/case.[1st edn thus.Limited to 600 copies - 40 of which SIGNED by the author (i.e. the translator) - this edn though,is an unsigned set.] FINE+/VG++.No owner inscrptn,no dw/dj - black paper-covered,card slipcase - as issued.Slipcase's fold/crease at foot of the spine/ backstrip is split/broken,and a bright,crisp and clean onlay b/w paper title label pasted to the spine/backstrip.Without the split the s/case's state would have been FINE.Four numbered (I-IV),12mo wraps volumes with brightly-coloured card-covers,one each of green,yellow,red,and blue respectively,all with negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present - they appear virtually as new.Each of the four numbered (I-IV) volumes written under a different name - Alberto Caeiro,Ricardo Reis and Alvaro de Campos plus the poet's own name,respectively.Volumes have respectively 26,24, 28,47pp of poems/poetry,translated from the Portuguese by Jonathan Griffin,who has also written the intro.Black ink lino-cut style illustration with black lettering,wraps' cover design all by Priscilla Eckhard with the textblocks clean,crisp and unmarked - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - unread? The poems in these four booklets were translated from the Portuguese, using the two collected editions of Fernando Pessia's poetry - that of 'Atica' (Lisbon),and that of 'Aguilar' (Rio de Janeiro,Brazil). Some of these translations have appeared in 'Journals od Pierre Menard' and 'Workshop'; others of Jonathan Griffin's versions of Pessoa will appear in a special Portuguese-Brazilian number of 'Modern Poetry in Translation',and a large selection will be brought out by Penguin Books (then 1971). Regarded as the greatest poet since Camoens (16thC),Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon on June 13th,1888,and died there on Novmber 30th,1935.
