Sir Edwin Henry Landseer[1802-1873],an English animal painter,was sketching cows and horses from life at the age of six,eight years later becoming an exhibitor.He passed through the Academy schools, took lessons from Benjamin Robert Haydon [1786-1846],became an associate of the Royal Academy at the earliest age possible(24),and in 1830 was elected a full member.His early works are informed with a spirit of masculine animalism,excelling in high finish and most accurate modelling.The pictures of his maturity are tinged with sentiment, sinking into sentimentality.'The Monarch of the Glen'(1851) nobly evinces his sense of the dramatic,and 'The Old Shepherd's Chief Mourner' (1837) is a masterpiece of pathos.Finally,his 'Man Proposes,God Disposes'(1864) - the cover of this catalogue,is gruesome enough to challenge comparison with David's 'Anatomy Lesson'.
