Scott Nearing (1883-1983) was an American economist, professor, and political activist. He openly advocated for peace and opposed the United States' involvement in wars including World War I and World War II. Nearing's views had a lasting effect and influenced many who opposed the Vietnam War. In this article, Nearing criticizes public schools, namely colleges and universities, for not maintaining free thinking and integrity in education. Excerpt: "Coal miners and carpenters sell their manual skill to the job-owner; physicists and sociologists sell their mental skill to the job-owner. All are hired hands or hired brains.
