ISBN 4901477943

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 312 pages. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Should also not be confused with Daido Moriyama's previous volumes of his color work, all of them simply called "Color". Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only that was not reissued once all of the copies were sold. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Daido Moriyama: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. There is no text. Publisher's original obi-band wrapped around the DJ. In publisher's original plastic wrappers. Printed on glossy stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Daido Moriyama's "Color". Page after page, most of them doublespreads, all of them "bleed", of the photographer's most recent and most ambitious images in color. All of them are of his beloved Tokyo, taken using a digital camera, and showcase Moriyama's achievement in color, a medium that the Master Photographer of black-and-white is NOT identified with even though he has published two major volumes: "Color" and "Color 2". "Documents Tokyo between 2008 and 2012. Amassing a total of 30, 000 digital images for the project, 'Color' is Moriyama's visual assault of photographs packed together. Images of street scenes, fleeting portraits, and snapshots of Moriyama's lived experiences are placed within the new viewing context of color. The resulting images present an exciting and stimulating viewing experience that lacks none of Moriyama's provocative black-and-white imagery" (Publisher's blurb). "The young lady who coolly crosses my path is a work of art. The middle-aged man sitting on the sidewalk in front of her is also a work of art. The middle-aged woman feverishly shopping in a crowded store is also a work of art. The cat stretching and yawning on the wall over there is also a work of art. The young guy in Kabukicho, the couples walking in the love hotel district, and the drunks in Golden-Gai are all, through and through, works of art. In other words, the city of Tokyo is filled with art, and all of its people are works of art. What about me, walking around with my digital camera, clicking away, and taking photos of this, that, and the other? Might I be a work of art, too?" (Daido Moriyama). In the sense that the indisputable art of our time is photography, and that photography has re-defined the work of art as medium, the answer is yes. Still, the question is merely provocative and rhetorical. What Moriyama is really saying is that "Color" is his photographic valentine to Tokyo, about which he loves everything unconditionally. An absolute "must-have" title for Daido Moriyama collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker by Daido Moriyama. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: This is Moriyama's color images of Tokyo and should not be confused with his previous volumes of color work also simply called "Color". The original obi-band is completely intact. A rare signed copy thus. 191 doublespread and full-page color plates. Five of Daido Moriyama's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Japanese photographer of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAIDO MORIYAMA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 4901477943.
