Very good in the original blue cloth, spine rather faded, scattered light foxing to text. A fine association copy, with the calligraphic ownership ink name of J L B Smith on the fep. Smith is best known for the discovery of the coelacanth, as well as authoring two standard works on fishes of Southern Africa and Seychelles. Tipped in on the inside front board is an autograph letter from the author, 2pp on Hotel Edward letterhead, dated 14 Dec 1948, presenting the book to Smith, dicussing an Eastern European edition of some 100,000 copies of the book; asking Smith when his book on Fishes would be published (it finally appeared in 1949), and informing him that he, the author, would be relocating to St Lucia in Northern Natal.
