William Morris, who began in business repairing bicycles in his parent's garden shed,at one time made more than half of all cars sold in Britain. Morris,MG, Wolseley,Riley were all his.At the height of his success he rocked the Stock Exchange by selling a quarter of his shares. He then vastly increased his benefactions aimed at improving hospitals, advancing medical research, improving education and re-employing miners and other workers during the years of the Depression.Within his lifetime,he succeeded in disposing of half-a-billion pounds in today's money (then 1994). When in 1936,Lord Nuffield (previously Sir William Morris - made Baron Nuffield, 1934.) started donating his earned fortune for wider public purposes,it was the highly regarded medical faculty of the University of Oxford that he first very substantially endowed. In the light of his remarkable munificence to the University and to Nuffield College,Oxford University gave a grant of £1,000 towards the cost of publication of this book. This is the story of a modest,quiet-living man whose enormous achievement in creating a car-manufacturing empire was surpassed by his brilliant foresight in ensuring that his fortune went to the continuing support of humanitarian causes. Honoured repeatedly during his life, and conferred with the title Viscount Nuffield, his name no longer meets with instant recognition, even though the name,'Nuffield',persists in so many worthy manifestations. The sprawling Morris Works at Cowley have now been levelled for re-development; Rover, the direct descendant of the Morris Organization, has recently moved out of British ownership; discredited business tycoons fill the headlines. It is indeed timely to re-assess the enterprise and benevolence of Lord Nuffield.
