Adam Mickiewicz(1798-1855),the greatest poet of Poland,is a great poet by any world-standard;but lack of adequate translation has left his works little known in Britain. This book, produced on the centenary of his death, exemplifies his main characteristics and should at long last make his name known to wide circles of readers. He lived through stormy days, and he packed into his work the whole life of his people at a moment of deep-going change. He belonged to the Romantic Epoch and had all its qualities of emotional ferment and aspiration;but at the same time he owned a classic breadth and balance. The result was a poetry of the highest order, with the outstanding achievement in 'Pan Tadeusz',an epic work of realistic force, deep insight, wit, lyrical charm, narrative energy and rich characterisation which George Brandes persuasively called "the only successful epic" of the 19thC.
