[METHODISM, AMERICAN]. HENTON'S CLASS, 1842-1857; Pleasant Grove, Missouri. This log-book is purpose made: a small and slim oblong folio, 6.5 x 7.5 inches, comprised of [43] ff. sewn into flexible leather wrappers, hand-lettered "Henton's Class" on front. Approximately 37 leaves have been completed by many unidentified hands. Ministers and preachers are listed for most years, as are the names of the class members - their marital status, state of grace, attendance at meetings, "quarterage" donations, etc. Small and less detailed lists of "coloured members" appear in three places. Also, scattered throughout are miscellaneous writings of faith. Twenty-six preachers and ministers from the Auburn, Bowling Green, and Louisiana Circuits, all located within the Missouri Conference, who tended the small Pleasant Grove congregation at that time are named and recorded in the Henton Class book. Some of the names appear in more than one year, such as Richard Bond, Jacob Sigler, W. W. Redman (or Redmund), George Smith, and Granville Gillum. The community of family members begins with that of John and Jane Henton. The size of the class remained relatively stable and was comprised of about 25-30 members for most years. The spelling of some members' names is not fixed and changes somewhat from one year to the next. Some of the other families and individual names that appear in the book are the Thomas family headed by James W. and Melinda, the Gillum (or Gillam) family, Mary Wren, Margaret Farr (or Pharr), Margaret Anderson, Susan Smith, Ebender Crow, and the Litteral (or Literal) family. Over the years, as members died, transferred, or withdrew, new members joined the class, including Robert Riggs, Rachel Poor, Dalana Jinnings, Nancy Corhorn, Mary Jameson, Margaret Hickerson, Eliza Meander, etc., etc. Tolivor Henton, Reuben Henton, and Washington Henton form the small group of "coloured members" recorded between the years 1851- 1853, with a note that "Lucy Crow joined in Jan. 15, 1855. Jessa Henton's colored girl joined the same time." Later additions to the group were Richard Williams and Sarah Newton. The leather cover shows the expected wear, and there are some minor tears and stains to some leaves within, but the condition of the log is very good overall.
