2pp, (of a 4pp folded shet), enclosing 2 cables refering to the Rand Leases flotation, stating that as he had been away he was out of touch and had no knowledge of his intended participation. "I wont let the rains (sic) slip out of my hands again....." Only one of the two telegrams is present. Hans Merensky (16 March 1871 in Botshabelo – 21 October 1952 in Westfalia near Duiwelskloof) was a German South African geologist, prospector, scientist, conservationist and philanthropist. He discovered the rich deposit of alluvial diamonds at Alexander Bay in Namaqualand, vast platinum and chrome reefs at Lydenburg, Rustenburg and Potgietersrus, which led to some of the largest platinum mines in the world, phosphates and copper at Phalaborwa in the Transvaal lowveld, gold in the Free State and the world’s biggest chrome deposit at Jagdlust near Pietersburg.. Hans PIROW (1892-1945) was a prominent mining engineer, the first mining student to obtain a DSc degree at Wits.. After a scientific mining carer including rising to acting Secretary of Mines, in 1937 he joined the Central Mining and Investment Corporation (also known as the Corner House Group) and became a director and chairman of many of its mines. He also served on various important government bodies. During his relatively short life he had a profound influence on the mining industry in South Africa.
