Letter handwritten in black ink on beige paper. Stationery has "U.S. Treasury Department, Washington" at the top. November 10, 1877. 5" x 8." Two pages. Paper is stained with a few small holes. Handwriting and signature are still legible and intact overall. Richard Cunningham McCormick (1832-1901) was an American politician, businessman, and journalist. He was appointed as the first Secretary of the Arizona Territory by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and served until 1866. From 1866-1868, McCormick was the 2nd Governor of the Arizona Territory. He was also the Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1869-1875 and was a member of the House from 1895-1897. Letter reads: "November 10, 1877. H. Q. Lavely, Esq., Pittsburg, Penna. Dear Sir: I do not recall you, but I am glad to hear from anyone who remembers me. It would give me pleasure to assist you here if it were feasible but our appointments are by law distributed among the states in proportion to population, and Pennsylvania already has more than her share. Moreover, at present, there are no vacancies, and, as they are made only for case, they seem but seldom. Yours truly, R. C. McCormick.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
