Four volumes (complete). Charles Mathews was one of the greatest and most admired actors of his generation. He was adept, adaptable and much loved. Half bound in calf with morocco labels and gilt titling. Five ridges and six panels. Marbled boards. Inside front covers have a label noting former acquisition by the Porkington Library - a private library owned by the Ormsby-Gore family (latterly the Earls of Harlech) - one of the great Welsh border country families. All volumes have wear to their leathered corners. The spines in particular have wear from age and handling. Each book has the volume number stamped on the spine. Volume 1 is strong and sturdy. The boards have some light shelving scuffing. The leathered corners are whole, worn. The spine is worn but healthy. Inside, there is a typed description from a previous owner/ dealer. The contents have some foxing but are otherwise fresh and clear - almost modern in aspect. Volume 2 (also published in 1838) is also worn. The label on the spine is broken. Yet, the spine has a contented feel to it. The boards have wear to their faces from storage. The corners are complete if also worn. Inside, the contents are firm and pleasant. There is some foxing but otherwise the pages are benign and kindly. Volume 3 is the most attractive. The boards do have have shelving scuffing but the leatherings are handsome and patrician. The initial pages have some damp stain tide-marks but these do intrude any further. The contents are therefore clean and pleasant and comfortable. Volume 4 is tight and sound and dignified. The corners have wear and the boards have some shelving scuffing. Inside, the pages are clean, clear and remarkably fresh. This is a contented, clubbable set.
