This epic poem in blank verse celebrates the fighting men of Texas from the days of the Texas Revolution to the present. The author researched letters, journals, and other primary sources to assure fidelity to historic events. Fighting Men of Texas, her major book-length poetry, crowns a lifetime of writing about Texas in both prose and poetry and composing musicals to help celebrate her native state. Much of the author's poetry was written and published during her younger years. Her more recent efforts have been other literary forms, principally three full-length musicals for which she wrote the book, music, and the lyrics. Her first musical was produced in Corpus Christi in 1976. Her most recent musical, Bi Hill: The Saga of Spindletop, was performed in 1986. A full-length stage play about Ima Hogg, the daughter of Texas Governor James Hogg, is her latest work in progress. A native of Waxahachie, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C.C. Cooke. In her earlier years, Mrs. Burkett won poetry prizes and was published was a member of the Poetry Society of Texas, and attended Dallas meetings while a student at Trinity University.
