MARGO BEHAN : 1927 - 1944 ARCHIVE OF 18 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARIES - DETAILING THE LIFE OF AN OHIO GIRL THROUGH THE DEPRESSION TO A CALIFORNIA WOMAN AS THE WAR IS ENDING

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Fascinating archive of eightteen [18] diaries from 1927 to 1944 written by Margo Behan, b. Dec. 8, 1910, listing herself in 1928 from Cleveland, Ohio or Horseshoe Glen, Lake Co., Ohio. It's hard not to like Margo. She is a delightful all-American girl in the truest and best sense, obviously grown up to some degree of privilege and culture but a young woman that in her youthful exuberance underlines the adjectives and frequently ends an entry with - "Had a peachy time!" She is a huge reader noting books and articles reads daily. She is also a huge opera fan who attends very frequently. Has a truck garden for asparagus, peas etc. Margo is a keen follower of current events and avidly diarizes hardly ever missing a day. She also clips newspapers and keeps odd bits of ephemera which are included in the books. It's quite a treat watching Margo develop from a 17 year old Ohio girl to a 34 year old woman in California's film industry. Here are snippets from 1927 - May 20: "Mademoiselle came at 8:15 am. Mrs. Ferguson declared a holiday…..the ladies staid 1 hr. Grrr! Lindy left NY for Paris at 7:20 this morning." "Pinky is back. He made a little speech at 10:30 on radio Hoo-ray!!!!" "Daddy came home at 1 o'clock…Mr. Bruhn called over that Lindy had crossed the channel so we tuned in Detroit and followed the flight till 4:21 pm when he landed at Le Bourget at Paris. Detroit went mad, in fact we all did. Hooray for Lindy!" June 11: "Heard darling Lindy's welcome….then all listened to the President and Lindy speak." "Making a Japanese scene in silhouette…2 big water birds and a tree." "Mrs. Martin read my s. story and urges me to write." "Started to write article for 'Your Garden'…it's a poem in prose entitled 'Chagrin, The River of Sorrow'." Chilling entries of the beginning of WWII as Margo repeats the news of the day in her own forthright way and how even from the very first day of the war [September 3rd, 1939] she catalogues; "The British ship "Athenia" sunk by sub. 125 casualties." Overall in good shape with a couple of books fair and most good+. Devotees of the art of the diarist will be thrilled by this lot.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: No Jacket
