The jury will remain out for eternity on the vexed question of which really is the oldest club in golf but,in terms of surviving records, none goes back further than the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Descended from the 'Gentlemen Golfers' who played at Leith links (where golf was played from at least the fifteenth century) the Honourable Company transferred first to Musselburgh and then,in 1891, to Muirfield. They celebrate their two hundred and fiftieth annivesary in 1994.In 1744 the City Fathers of Edinburgh presented a silver cup to them for annual competition and in the club's minute book of that same year are to be found the original Rules of Golf, inscribed in longhand. The Thirteen Articles, alias the Leith Code, were adopted in 1754 almost word for word by the society detined to become the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. The letter of the law has inevitably changed as golf itself has chamged but,in spirit and principle, the Thirteen Articles are with us yet. 'Muirfield' is a celebration of one of the world's greatest golf courses and the Honourable Company who play there.
