"Printed for the Members of the Book Club of California, May MCMLXXII" is printed at the bottom of the first page. A tribute and eulogy to Florence G. Walter (1884-1972) who was a bookbinder and book collector based in San Francisco. This pamphlet is also biographical and highlights her career and accomplishments. Walter's bookbinding expertise was in what is known as the French style of bookbinding. She was a student of Belle McMurtry Young and Herbert and Peter Fahey of San Francisco and also of Charles Collet of Paris. Her work was exhibited at several prominent institutions such as the Princeton University Library, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Art, and the World's Fair in Brussels. As a collector, Walter focused on twentieth-century printing, but her collection included exceptional examples of printing that spanned the fifteenth century to the twentieth. Walter was very involved with the Book Club of California, where she became its director, chair of the house committee, and first woman president of the Club from 1952-1955. The author of this pamphlet, David Magee (1905-1977), was a San Francisco bookseller, bibliographer, and novelist. In his career, he was the president of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA), the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, and the Book Club of California.. Book. Book Condition: Fine.
