'Winter's Tales 3' offers for many readers who find enjoyment in the long-short story, a further exciting and varied collection by a particularly interesting assembly of authors - some well-known, others "up and coming". 'Something Special' is the ONLY published short story by Iris Murdoch and this is it's FIRST appearance in print, and in this title. After inclusion in other anthologies in Japan (1971, 1972),England (1979) and Finland (1990) it was republished separately by Chatto & Windus in 1999. 'Poltergeist' is the first appearance in print in this anthology. 'The Black Madonna' by Doris Lessing is also this story's first appearance in print. It precedes the (UK) Michael Joseph Ltd,1964,as part of the collection 'African Stories'.The story's title was given to the collection of African stories later published in 1966 by (UK) Panther p/back. With its political content make it one of Lessing's best African stories. It offers a biting sociopolitical and cultural commentary on the social structure and British colonial attitudes in Zambesia, once part of Southern Rhodesia, now the independent nation of Zimbabwe. Amongst the contributors are: Noel Blakiston, Brigid Brophy, Kathleen Farrell, C. D. Heriot, John Hodgson, Pamela Hansford Johnson, Doris Lessing, Walter machen, Iris Murdoch, William Sansom, Laura Talbot and Frank Tuohy. Accompanying illustrators are: David Knight, Stuart Tresilian, Lola Fielding, Fred Exell, Victor Reinganum, Janet Pullan, John Robinson, Prudence Seward, James Farmer, Fritz Wegner, Stewart Irwin and Virginia Smith.
