'The Broons' is a comic strip in Scots published in the weekly Scottish newspaper,'The Sunday Post'. It features the Brown family,who live in a tenement flat at 10 Glebe Street,in (since the late 1990's) the fictional Scottish town of Auchentogle or Auchenshoogle. Originally created by writer/editor R. D. Low and artist Dudley D. Watkins,the strip made its first appearance in the issue dated 8 March 1936.Since its inception,'The Broons' have had their own biennial,alternating each year with 'Oor Wullie' annuals.No annuals were published during 1943 and 1945 due to paper-rationing in World War II. Early strips written in the 1930's featured less dialogue where most of the pictures told the story,this was more common in 'Oor Wullie' strips; however the occasional 'Broons' strip did this too. Although the 'Broons' & 'Oor Wullie' started in 1936,the annuals weren't actually published until 1939 starting with 'The Broons' and since then the annuals alternating years with 'Oor Wullie',another D. C. Thomson product.Books pre-1965 weren't dated,though after that,they had a copyright date with annuals normally being published in the autumn for the Christmas market.The early editions of 'The Broons' annuals are highly sought-after collectors' items,some fetching in excess of four-figure sums at auctions.For example,the original 1st edn of this particular annual at Comic Book Postal Auctions in June 2008,fetched an amazing £4,500,a record still standing today (2016). This facsimile of the very first 'Broons' annual was released on 25 November 2006.Watkins drew the strip from his Broughty Ferry home until his death in 1969.For five years after Watkins' death,D. C. Thomson re-cycled old strips in the newspaper and annuals,suspecting that no adequate replacement could be found to match Watkins's unique style. Dudley D[exter] Watkins (1907-69) born Manchester,son of a lithographer and brought up in Nottingham,and attended evening classes at Nottingham School of Art before entering as a full-time student on a scholarship (1924). Subsequently worked as a cartoonist and illustrator for the newspaper and magazine publisher D. C. Thomson and Co.,Dundee (1925- 69).He was a lay preacher and drew calendars and cartoons in support of missionary work.He also taught life drawing and illustration at evening classes at Dundee School of Art. For D. C. Thomson he largely created and entirely drew such strip-cartoon classics as 'Oor Wullie' and 'The Broons' (The Sunday Post),'Biffo the Bear' and 'Lord Snooty and his Pals' (Beano),and 'Desperate Dan' (Dandy).He worked in b/w, offsetting fluent economical outlines with small areas of hatching and solid black (any wash work was done by Thomson): a style that reproduced admirably on newsprint.Beneath his simplication lay confident draughtsmanship,a capacity for effective frame compositions and an instinct for well selected detail.Since his death,his cartoon strips have been continued in a clumsy paraphrase of his style,but originals are still sometimes republished in the various Thomson comics and annuals.Though book illustration formed a very minor part of his work,his is an important contribution to a humorous graphic tradition that goes back to W.
