English translation from the French of 1715-35. Alain-Rene Lessage (1668-1747) was a noted French translator, playwright, and novelist whose most famous work is Gil Blas. The novel is about life in Spain and the Spanish court during the 17th century. It is the adventures of Oviedo as he goes into the world to be an adult. Intended for college he becomes a valet for the rich and eventually ends up in the Spanish court and through hard work and intelligence he becomes the favorite of the King.
