From training days in Dartmouth; service on the battleship HMS Hood and the cruiser HMS Naiad,until she was torpedoed in the Mediterranean; life aboard HMS Duke of York and service in the Pacific; teaching at the newly founded Royal Naval Engineering College at Manadon in Plymouth,and finally as a naval Attaché and Commander,British Navy Staff in Washington D.C. Vice-Admiral Sir Louis Le Bailly (1915-2010) was a naval officer and Director of General Intelligence (1972 to 1975),responsible at the height of the Cold War for the collection of information on the enemy, primarily the Soviet Union and its allies. Le Bailly trained in the battleship HMS Hood in 1932,he wanted to pursue a career as a navigator,but was prevented from doing so,by his defective eyesight. Reluctantly,he became an engineer and studied at the Royal Naval Engineering College in Keyham,and returned to HMS Hood as a junior engineer officer,serving from 1937 to 1940.From 1942 to 1944 Le Bailly taught at Keyham in Plymouth before joining the battleship 'Duke of York',from which he observed the Japanese surrender on board the 'USS Missouri'.
