A comprehensive treatise about the latest archaeological discoveries in the ancient cities of Nineveh, Babylon, and Nimrud and nearby locations. Among the numerous discoveries described herein are tombs, villages, mounds, bas-relief sculptures, standing sculptures, vessels, clay seals, and coffins. Archaeological sites are also described in great detail by the author. Beautiful plates, maps, plans, and in-text illustrations accompany such descriptions and depict local scenery, portraits of residents, artifacts, and ancient architecture such as labyrinthine passageways and subterranean chambers. The author also describes his travels and observations of local cultures and customs in Armenia, Kurdistan, and surrounding area. As noted in the Preface, this book addresses recent discoveries about the cuneiform language as well. Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) was an English archaeologist, art historian, collector, politician, and diplomat. Layard specialized in the study of Assyria and was as an excavator at the sites of Nimrud and Nineveh. At Nineveh, he discovered the Library of Ashurbanipal in 1851 and many palace reliefs.
