Lansing (1864-1928) was an American diplomat who served as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson (1915-20). Stilson was the son of a friend of Lansing--Mrs. William (Mary) Stilson of Los Angeles. The first five letters are written on official Secretary of State stationary, the last is written on the letterhead of Lansing law office. Six total pages. The letters summarized: 1916: Lansing writes Stilson about civil service requirements. 1916: Lansing states that he is not involved in the presidential campaign because foreign policy should be above politics. 1917: A second letter aboutjob opportunities. 1918: A letter of introduction for Stilson, who is going to travel to China and Japan. 1921: Lansign that Stilson for compliments on Lansing's book..
