Original Popeye miniature dime bank. Fully functional. Made of steel or aluminum and is octagonal (square with beveled corners) in shape. Characters from the popular series are printed on the top and sides. Popeye features on the top. "Copr. King Feat. Synd 1929" printed below the illustration of Popeye. 1929 or circa 1930s. 2 1/2" x 2 1/2." Bank is very clean and intact except for slight rubbing to corners and edges. A Fine copy. A charming and unique item, an original Popeye miniature savings bank that stores dimes. Printed lettering on bottom instructs users that the bank locks at the first dime and can be opened with the lever once $5.00 is reached. Rotating counter on top. Three other Popeye characters appear on the bank. Olive Oyl, Popeye's significant other, is illustrated on the left side panel; an unknown character is on the front panel; and J. Wellington Wimpy, Popeye's hamburger-loving friend, appears on the right panel. Popeye, or Popeye the Sailor Man, was a character created by Elize Crisler Segar (1894-1938), who wrote and illustrated under the pen name, "E. C. Segar." Popeye made his first appearance in the comic strip, Thimble Theatre, in 1929. The comic strip was syndicated under King Features. Thimble Theatre was later renamed after its titular character, Popeye, in the 1970s. Popeye is one of the longest-running syndicated comic strips to this day and has received a number of spin-offs and many appearances in other media.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
