Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly With financial backing from her thir d husband, Harry Guggenheim of the boundlessly wealthy mining family, Alici a Patterson, daughter of the owner of the New York Daily News , founded a n ewspaper on Long Island in 1940. Cynics called Newsday ``Alicia's toy,'' bu t she had the drive and courage to make the paper succeed. Before her death in 1956, however, her husband wrested control of the paper from her; later , in 1970, this conservative Republican, who began to see a ``dangerous lef tist'' behind every typewriter, sold the tabloid to the Chandler family of the Los Angeles Times, mistakenly believing they would make it a voice of r eactionaryism. As recounted here, the corporate history up to the time of t he sale is riveting, the subsequent years less so, but Keeler, editor of Ne wsday 's Sunday magazine, while unfailingly respectful of the paper, is uns paringly frank about the employees, naming the alcoholics, gamblers, male c hauvinists and crooks as well as paying tribute to the heroes and heroines. Photos not seen by PW. (Sept.) Library Journal - Library Journal Excellent oral history and thorough research only partially save this overwritten recollection of the 50-year history of the Long Island newspaper. Though a long-time Newsday staffer, Keeler does not show fawning favoritism, but he does focus far too much on personalities and personal affairs, especially those of founder Alicia Patterson Guggenheim. There is not enough about the contents of the newspaper itself and the period that really demands attention, the 1970s and 1980s, when Newsday becomes a national influence.
