Original typescript containing a biographical sketch of Benjamin Wait; information about Indigenous tribes in northeastern, eastern, and southeastern United States and Canada during the French and Indian War; and six hand-drawn color illustrations done in watercolor. Three of the illustrations are full-page and the remaining three are painted within the text. No date, circa 1960s. 8 1/2" x 11." Two of the full-page illustrations are tipped-in hand-drawn maps measuring 6 1/2" x 8 1/2." Fifteen pages, including illustrations. Five additional photocopied printouts (likely for research) included. Each leaf is very clean and intact except for slight age toning, a few wrinkles, occasional staining, and tape residue on two leaves. Each leaf and the entire collection are Very Good. A unique typescript with beautiful watercolor illustrations. Artist of the watercolors is unknown. The first part of the typescript is a brief biography of Benjamin Wait, about five pages. The rest of the typescript comprises illustrations and background information about Indigenous tribes of northeastern, eastern, and southern U.S. and Canada during the French and Indian War, with most emphasis placed on the Iroquois and Algonquin (or Algonquian). Page 6 credits the Benjamin Wait sketch as being from an address by Matt Bushnell Jones that he delivered at Waitsfield, Vermont on September 15, 1906. "Courtesy of the Joslyn Memorial Library, Waitsfield, Vermont" also typed on Page 6. Benjamin Wait (also, Waite; 1736-1822) grew up in Sudbury and Brookfield, Massachusetts and fought in the French and Indian War from 1755-1761. He served as an ensign in Rogers's Rangers, a ranger company tasked with reconnaissance and special operations, until they disbanded in 1761. Wait also served in other ranger companies over the years, held high-ranking military position, and was part of the 1777 Vermont Constitutional Convention. Wait also founded Waitsfield, Vermont and became its first settler and the town leader. Much of sketch about Wait in this typescript concisely discusses his time as a soldier during the French and Indian War. The part of the typescript about Indigenous Peoples is also brief and covers topics such as war regalia, meaning of war paint, and alliances during the French and Indian War. The following are the subjects of the full-page illustrations: one of Rogers's Rangers; map of the territories of principal Indigenous tribes in northeastern and southeastern Untied States and Canada (Algonquian, Iroquoian, Siouan, and Muskogean); and map of original territories of Indigenous tribes in northeastern, eastern, and southeastern U.S. and Canada. The three in-text watercolors are portraits of three Indigenous warriors.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
