JOHNSON, Samuel : Dictionary of the English Language

JOHNSON, Samuel. A Dictionary of the English Language: In Which the Words Are Deduced from Their Originals, Illustrated in Their Different Significations by Examples from the Best Writers. To Which Are Prefixed a History of the Language, and an English Grammar. Phila.: Moses Thomas, 1818. 4to. 2 Vols. 1st American ed. Portrait frontis. Rebound in period style full leather, gilt-ornamented with raised spine bands. Light scattered foxing and toning, else a very good copy. The first American edition from the eleventh London edition. Johnson's was not the first dictionary of English, but its ground-breaking use of examples from literature made it the example that all later dictionaries followed including Webster and the Oxford English Dictionary. Though this edition of Johnson's Dictionary appeared in a four-volume octavo edition (1818- 1819), the quarto edition is far less common and more desirable.
