Jeffers, Robinson : Dear Judas: And Other PoemsHorace Liveright, New York, 1929
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Slight soiling, rubbing and browning to covers (cloth over boards; chiefly to spine edges and foredges); slight bumping to upper right corners; previous owner's ink inscription (partly faded) at head of front free endpaper; previous bookseller's paper label (partial) and pencil inscription on rear attached endpaper; slight internal browning to edges and endpapers. 129 pages. Alberts #60; the trade issue of the book, containing the title verse play (which revisits the passion of Christ and the betrayal of Judas more in the Noh tradition than in the Gnostic), plus "The Loving Shepherdess" and 6 other poems. One of 3000 trade copies, published November 16, 1929; this particular copy has a particularly interesting history, judging from the front free endpaper alone. Faded ink inscription at head reads "John Douglas Short / Xmas 1929 for Marie"; at foot of the page, in slightly more faded condition, is the more or less legible inscription in the author's easily recognizable holograph: "To Marie Short -- if I can make / the pen work -- with love and ink -- / Robin Jeffers. / May, 1944." The signature itself is the only part of the inscription remaining with all the original blue-gray ink still present; pencil annotation (by a previous bookseller) on rear attached endpaper reads "probably erased by Una Jeffers". As a perceived rival for her husband's affection, this is understandable (Una Jeffers was characterized for just this sort of jealous reaction to inscriptions, letters, notes and other holograph Jeffers items she herself felt to be "unauthorized", in a manner of speaking); Ms. Short seems to have been a frequent enough visitor to Tor House throughout the 1930's and 1940's, and judging from the uncommon usage of the shortened form of "Robinson" in the signature, the indication of personal intimacy is apparent. Nice, tight copy internally, with only minor external flaws, all things considered.. Illustr.: Decorative Title Page (red/black). Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hard Cover.
