This is a French reissue of the account of early Dutch voyages published in 1608 by Commelin. This is the first French translation from the original Dutch, carried out by Renneville. The Dutch were engaged in searching for the most efficient sea route to the East Indies, including a “North-East Passage” to the north of Russia. The first part documents the early exploring expeditions to the northeast, between 1591 and 1595. It describes only three voyages, including the famous wintering in Nova Zembla. The second part describes the first Dutch voyage by way of the Cape of Good Hope under the command of Houtman (1595-96). Upon their successful return with spices from the East Indies, the Dutch focussed all their fleets on the south-eastern route over the next few years, resulting in the formation of the Dutch East India Company in 1602.

Complete in itself and does not include the supplementary 2-volume Voyage de Gautier Schouten aux Indes Orientales, because it was not published with the Machuel edition (Sabin: “This edition was printed in larger type, and contains some additions, with more maps and plates. With regards to the first English edition (1703), Hill writes, “Renneville was a French-born professor of religion in Holland; he completed this work prior to his eleven-year imprisonment (1702-1713) in the Bastille for allegedly having criminal correspondence with foreigners. Following his release, Renneville wrote a scathing account of his term in the most famous of French prisons, as well as expanding this work on East-India Company voyages to ten volumes, several published posthumously.”
Provenance of Pierre Margry, an important 19th-century French archivist and historian. The spines bear his name in gilt lettering. Booklabel of the Paris bookseller Charles Chadenat.
Pierre Margry (1818-1894) dedicated his life to researching the history of France’s overseas exploits (“les exploits français”). He worked as an archivist at the Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies (the Naval and Colonial Ministry) in Paris, and was able to compile the biographies of several French explorers previously forgotten. As his fame as a historian of French colonial history mounted, so did his private collection of exploration books. According to one source, Margry often butted heads with noted American historian Francis Parkman: the latter often accused Margry of neglecting important information in his historical accounts, as well as denying Parkman access to his private library for the American’s own researches. Margry’s defense was that the public could only take historical truth if revealed gradually, and that he was working to the best of his ability. These books form part of that private collection of travel books so defiantly hoarded by Margry from his contemporaries.
