HUNT, Leigh : Critical Essays on the Performers of the London Theatres, Including General Observations on the Practise and Genius of the Stage, By the Author of the Theatrical Criticisms in the Weekly Paper Called The News

London: John Hunt, 1807

First Edition. A very good copy indeed in mid-20th century cream boards, paper title label in ealrly 19thy century style. Apart from Juvenilia (1801), this is Leigh Hunts earliest solo publication, and extremely scarce. Complete with half title, 8pp. prospectus for The Examiner, and a single page of adverts at end. An interesting association copy, inscribed by Chas W Reynell (19th century printer/publisher and close friend of Leigh Hunt) to William Farren, presumably the actor mentioned by Hunt in Our Town and other works. There is , in Reynell's hand on the half title, an 8 line quote from the Times of Sept 4th 1850, referring to Leigh Hunt and the theatre, and a seven line pencil note on the verso of the half title, signed CWR, giving a critical assessment of this work. Hunt was visiting Reynell in August 1859 when he died of exhaustion.
