Hujar, Peter (Photographer) & Fraenkel, Jeffrey; Marks, Matthew (Publisher/Gallerists) : Animals: Photographs By Peter Hujar

Matthew Marks Gallery/Jeffrey Fraenkel Gallery, New York City, NY, 2016

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 8 pages. Rare Peter Hujar collectible set. Pristine copies of the "Animals" Postcard Collection, issued by Matthew Marks Gallery New York, and "Peter Hujar: Photographs" Exhibition Souvenir Poster, issued by Jeffrey Fraenkel Gallery San Francisco. There are eight 4 X 6 Postcards in all, with a loose glassine title page. Each is printed on stiff, archival paper in the United States to the highest standards. The Poster is folded into four equal parts, to show three lovely (and relatively little-known) images by the photographer: "Paul Thek, Nude, Astride Zebra, 1965", "Self-Portrait, Jumping, 1974", and "Draped Male Nude, 1979" . The first two images fold out into the full-page, male-nude poster image. Published over the first decade of the 21st century on the occasion of separate major retrospectives and also, coincidentally, to mark the publication of the first and only book published in Hujar's lifetime, "Portraits In Life And Death" (1976), one of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Twin Palms had also published some of the images in 2005 as "Animals And Nudes". "Unsurpassed (and unsurpassable) male and female nudes as well as portraits of animals that are, collectively, among the finest ever taken in the history of photography. Hujar kept alive the tradition of masterful touch in photography, but reinvented traditional subject matter with his stunning conjunction of aesthetic restraint and emotional openness. He could identify with the animals he photographed to the point of thinking he was creating a self-portrait without irony or sentimentality. And few have seen deeper into the mortality of the nude, whether with joy, arousal, or tribulation, or shifting shades of all three" (Klauss Kertess). The reason Hujar's photographs are sublime is that he did not see his work as being about a subject other than himself, not out of vanity but on the contrary, in all his vulnerability. His portraits are self-portraits, which express and transcend his own body and milieu at the same time, and therefore have the purity and timeless quality that people often refer to when they speak of his work. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, set for Peter Hujar collectors. These copies of the "Animals" Postcard Collection and Folded Exhibition Souvenir Poster are now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare set thus. 8 Postcards, 1 Folded Exhibition Souvenir Poster. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine set. (SEE ALSO OTHER PETER HUJAR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
