Original signature in black ink on a light beige sheet of paper. Signed, "With compliments from, A. P. Herbert," with a brief inscription denoting the location at top. No date, circa 1920s-1930s. 4 1/2" x 7." Signature and paper are very clean and intact except for a horizontal fold line at center, light age toning, a few small wrinkles, and some offsetting on back from a newspaper clipping. Some of the offsetting faintly appears on front. A Very Good copy. Sir Alan Patrick Herbert (1890-1971), also known as A. P. Herbert, was an English author, humorist, law reformer, and an independent Member of Parliament. Early in his career, Herbert contributed to Punch magazine and eventually became one of its staff members in 1924. He also served during both World War I and World War II. Herbert wrote a number of novels and plays and became well-known for his Misleading Cases series of satirical legal documents. These documents, although fictitious, often made compelling legal and political arguments that reflected Herbert's approach to reforming laws he viewed as obsolete.. Manuscript.
