In 1793, during the French Revolutionary Wars, Robert Faulknor the younger, then a Commander with his own small vessel, fought on the HMS Zebra alongside the HMS Asia during a battle at Fort Royal (Fort-de-France) on Martinique. The two ships were meant to provide covering fire for ground troops landing in the port. However, seeing that the Asia was under heavy fire from the port's defenses, Faulknor pulled his ship out of formation, and into the harbour, from where he personally led a number of ground troops and scaled the walls of the French fort. His courage rallied the British troops, and his efforts were rewarded with a promotion to Captain and the command of a larger vessel. He died a year later in a naval battle.
