A wood engraving from the March 19, 1864, issue of Harper's Weekly. This dramatic photo was taken by Dr. Henry Draper, professor of natural sciences at the University of New York with photographic equipment he designed for use with telescopes. A pioneer in spectroscopy, Draper's memory was honored with an endowment at Harvard for the study of stellar spectra.
Draper was a pioneer in the field of astrophotography, using telescopes to capture pictures as well as the reflected spectra of various celestial bodies. This photograph comes from earlier in his career, while he was still a professor and physician--he left medicine in 1873 to dedicate his time to astronomy.
