A Very Good copy. A production of Watch on the Rhine at the Eaglet Theater in Sacramento, California. Presented by the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theater. Lillian Hellman (1905-1984) was an American author, playwright, and screenwriter. She was sympathetic toward Communism and was unfortunately blacklisted for her political beliefs after being questioned by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). However, she maintained a successful career with many of her plays appearing on Broadway. In 1942, Hellman was also nominated for an Academy Award for her screenplay of The Little Foxes. She won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Watch on the Rhine. Watch on the Rhine (1941) is a dramatic play about a German-born man, Kurt Mueller, and his family who are living in the United States during the early 1940s. Much of plot focuses on Mueller's anti-Fascist involvement in Germany and Spain. While he, his wife Sara, and their three children appear to be safe in the U.S., things take a turn when his role in helping the anti-Fascist and anti-Nazi movements is found out. Joan Didion (1934-2021) was an American author based in Sacramento. Many of her works received critical acclaim, and her memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. In this performance of Hellman's Watch on the Rhine, Didion is acting in the role of Babette Mueller, one of Kurt and Sara Mueller's children. Didion is listed as the "alternate" actress for Friday night's performance.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
