Dartmoor is more readily pictured as a silent, barren waste than as an industrial area.Yet over the centuries a surprisingly wide variety of industries has been based on its apparently meagre natural resources.Changing social and economic conditions have killed most of them, but for the very reason that the moor is now deserted, save by ramblers, farmers and the thriving china-clay works, the remains of its industrial past still stand, changed only by the weather. The extractive industries have of course predominated. The 'moorstone' or granite of which Dartmoor is made has been used for purposes ranging from ancient tinners' blowing-houses to London Bridge; the tramway built in 1820 to carry it from Haytor quarry to the Stover Canal even had granite rails, some of which can still be seen.China clay,a derivative of granite,is now a valuable export and its workers have their own unique community.Tin was mined on a fairly large scale in the 16thC, copper in the 19thC.The ups and downs of 19thC attempts to cut peat commercially embody much economic history. Water-powered mills have abounded on the edges of the moor; astonishingly, the buildings and the testing-mortar of a gun-powder factory have been found in its depths.A glassworks,an iceworks, and the work of the 19thC 'agricultural improvers' are here fully described,as are the trackways, tramways and railways that have in their turn served man's struggle with a harsh environment.'The Industrial Archaeology of Dartmoor' is indeed the story of optimistic small-scale enterprise contending with weather and isolation.See also,rja484514 for another title from the same series. A popular title from the 'The Industrial Archaeology of the British Isles'; a 3-part series, the first group of books, edited by Dr E.R.R. Green, consisting of regional history and eventually covering the whole of the British Isles. The second group of volumes examines smaller areas in greater detail. Finally, there are volumes on specific subjects. All books have the same format and are uniform.
