Harper's Bazar (later, Harper's Bazaar) was founded in 1867 by Harper & Brothers as a fashion magazine aimed toward middle- and upper-class women. While its focus was fashion, Harper's Bazar also included general-interest subjects such as short fiction, poetry, local news, and miscellaneous facts. The magazine was initially based on the German fashion magazine, Der Bazar. Harper's Bazaar is still published to this day as a monthly fashion magazine aimed toward women readers. The March 7, 1885 issue of Harper's Bazar. Much of this issue is composed of brief articles. The following are some of the titles of the articles or features in this issue: "Women and Men. 'But Strong of Will'" [refutes the notion women are not "strong of will" and advocates that both men and women should have strong willpower], "New York Fashions," [spread with several illustrations of fashion attire and toilette bottles], "Lazarus in London: Chapter XII" [short fiction], "Paris Fashion," "An Avalanche in Piedmont" [illustrated with a spread on following pages of the cataclysmic avalanche in the Piedmontese Alps region of Savoy region; split down the center], "White Heather: A Novel; Chapter X [fiction], "Cross-Eyed Ellen" [possibly short fiction; about a young Irish woman who is self-conscious of her cross-eye and wants it to be operated on], "A Street in Tangier" [short travelogue about Morocco's famous city, with an accompanying full-page illustration], and [cartoon about the trials and tribulations of having a pet monkey]..
