"The Well of Loneliness is a 1928 lesbian novel by the British author Radclyffe Hall. It follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" (homosexuality) is apparent from an early age. She finds love with Mary Llewellyn, whom she meets while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection, which Hall depicts as having a debilitating effect on inverts. 8vo.. First edition first impression of this landmark lesbian novel, but second issue with 'whip' corrected to 'whips' on page 50. However both book and dw. conform in all other ways with the first issue and still a scarce item in dw. The book is bright with very light offsetting to the pastedowns but otherwise unmarked and unfoxed. The dw. is about complete and non price-clipped but has a few small chips, most notably at the base of the spine up to 1cm. deep but not affecting the lettering. There is an irregular tear of about 6cms. with some associated creasing at the top of the back panel adjacent to the spine and several other shorter tears. The dw. is also somewhat soiled..
