Often works as 'Ionicus'.Born in Hoylake, Cheshire,son of a fisherman.Studied at Liverpool School of Art (1929-35).His career as a teacher (1936-50) was interrupted by service in the Royal Navy as an instructor during WW2.A book and magazine illustrator since 1950,working in b/w and colour. Also a painter in oils and watercolour. Contributor to 'Punch' from 1944.Designer of book jackets for Penguin Books since 1968.Early in his career,he developed a simplified pen and ink style of unusual clarity,using firm outlines and varied yet precise hatching.His contributions to 'Punch' has a discernible influence on humorous draughtmanship during the late 1950's and 1960's.
