Gladstone, a journalist for the London Times, presents a contemporary picture of life and politics in Kansas in 1856 based upon his own experience and observations, as well as other newspaper accounts. According to Larned (Literature of American History, no. 2038), it is accurate, well-written and Free-Soil in its sympathies.
