Many dealers erroneously quote this as a first edition wheras if one reads the 'Preface to the present edition' it clearly states "The first edition of this little book was issued thirty-six years ago under the title of 'Tropical South Africa'." This second edition is expanded with a new map, and an appendix, bringing up the history of Damaraland to a recent date; together with a biographical introduction by the editor. Also, Vacation Tours in 1860 and 1861 by Sir george Grove. Original aqua-marine boards. Spine darkened, gilt titling faded but easily discernible. Head and tail worn. Corners bumped. Ownership signatures to front pastedown and fep. Front hinge cracked entire length, gauze intact. Back hinge split and pulled away. Pages xviii + 320 with 4 following pages of adverts for 'The Minerva Library of Famous Books'. Page fore-edge rough cut; prelims spotted. (AD-TYY-HHY-15C). Book. Book Condition: Good. The Minerva Library of Famous Books. A very good copy indeed in contemporary 1/2 dark green polished calf, raised bands with gilt lines and ornament above and below, each compartment with central gilt ornament, contrasting red leather title label, red cloth sides, marbled edges and endpapers.
