FORSYTH**, FREDERICK: : THE DAY OF THE JACKAL.**

USA,NY.VIKING,1971.

ISBN 0670259365.

US,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/VG+.Small neat owner inscrptn to front endpaper, behind front inner dw/dj flap, but no price-clip to same.Small water/ink(?) splash to front dw/dj,boards unaffected beneath.Very lightly marked dw/dj,no creases, tears or nicks.Simultaneous as UK 1st edn. Author's debut thriller novel, his second book, the first being The Biafra Story (non-fiction) published as a Penguin Special,1969,a freelance journalist's report of the Biafran War,which sold 30,000 copies. Forsyth wrote 'Day of the Jackal' in 35 days working night and day.Telling friends he expected to make £5,000 they laughed saying he'd be lucky to make £500.UK publishers Collins, Cassell,W.H.Allen and Michael Joseph (who later sacked their reader for not spotting it) all turned the book down. Hutchinson's spotted the potential spending £3,000 on promotion,a fortune in publishing terms, and offered Forsyth a three book contract. And,of course,as the typescript had been read and approved by Andre Malraux, the former Minister of Culture to President de Gaulle,it helped a great deal! The first print run was increased up to an impressive 30,000 copies - still not enough as it turned out.Within months Corgi had paid £45,000 for paperback rights and then Bantam (US) paid three times as much for the same rights.Three years later it had sold 1.25 million copies in all editions in the UK and 6 million worldwide, and was translated into 11 languages. A man alienated from his own society decides to kill General de Gaulle. The reader follows along as he moves with ruthless professionalism from one stage to the next - the false passport, the evasion of pursuers, the construction of a rifle that will pass undetected through security checks - in his attempt to commit the perfect assassination. A documentary spy thriller, based to a very large extent on fact. All but a few characters were real, although some had their names changed and their descriptions altered to mask the dangers of libel."I do not have the kind of imagination to spin a character out of the air," Forsyth admitted."I met the Jackal; although he did not have the smoothness and style of my Jackal. He was simply a professional killer". Forsyth also had the advantage of knowing the lower ranks of the OAS [Organisation de l'Armee Secrete] in France as well as the biographical details of some of their leaders. If there was ever a spy book based on journalistic experience, this was it.There is still controversy as to how factual the novel actually is.Forsyth himself has declined to say whether the assassination plot he described was real and whether the leak of information through the leadership of the Secret Service he described was also true. But there were a number of attempts to kill de Gaulle during 1963,the year in which the novel is set.So enthralling is the story that however many times you read it, you still wonder whether this time he will make it. A difficult, elusive, sought after debut title by a collectable author. Want more Frederick FORSYTH titles?
