Friedrich von Esmarch (1823-1908) as a professor at Kiel and a great military surgeon, most famous for describing the Esmarch bandage, an elastic bandage for hemostasis and still a staple in modern operating rooms. He served through German military campaigns of 1848-50 (Schleswig-Holstein War) 1864-66 (German-Danish War) & 1870-71(Franco-Prussian War).
