ELIZABETH REIGART : 1854 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE DAUGHTER OF A PROMINENT PENNSYLVANIA FAMILY

24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. On offer is an interesting, original 1854 manuscript diary handwritten by Elizabeth Reigart was the daughter of Catherine and Robert Jenkins a prominent Pennsylvania family living at Windsor Forges, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Born about 1804 she had married Philip Wager Reigart who died in 1833, and at the time of this diary she was living with her mother Catherine (d. 1856) at Windsor. The value of Elizabeth's property at the Census of 1860 is set at $20,000. Grandfather David Jenkins (1731-1797) was a Major in the Revolutionary Army. The entries are to the point but very telling of the life and times as she describes everything from the mundane to the unique; from heavy falls of snow and trips by sleigh, going to church, preparing foods, cleaning but then one read fascinating entries that record the visit of Maungwudaus, an Ojibwa Indian who converted to Christianity in 1824, to the family home on March 19th and 20th. On a practical level Elizabeth does a fine job noting all her visitors, friends and family by name. The 14.5 x 5.5 cm. written in pencil, pocket leather wallet diary with strap. Some small wear to head of spine. 147 daily entries in pencil, the pages for 6 - 11 February and 31 - 5 July are missing. Overall G.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good
