4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is the notebook of a student who studied under a distinguished American professor of both History and Political Economy in the late 19th century. Dating from 1885, this hardcover notebook measures approximately 10.5 inches by 8 inches. It contains 144 pages and is 95% complete. Notes are also written on the inside of each cover. The cover is in good condition and all of the pages are intact. Written in both ink and pencil, the handwriting is legible. Edwin Noah Hardy was a student at Amherst College, MA from 1883 until 1887. He was born in Nelson NH in 1861 and passed away in 1950 in Keen, NH. Subsequent to his graduation from Amherst, he attended Hartford Theological Seminary and became a minister. He would later earn a Ph.D. at Boston University. He married Nellie May Severy of Westboro, Massachusetts, in October of 1890. He and Nellie had four children. This notebook contains lecture notes from a history course he took from Professor Anson D. Morse. Morse was a noted historian who taught both History and Political Economy. He lectured at Amherst for more than 40 years. Professor Morse was a leader in a small group of scholars who in the last quarter of the nineteenth century began to emphasize political parties as the most effective tool in expressing the popular will. He published three notable articles on the subject of party in the years 1891-1896. Morse was best known for his abilities as a teacher, and his methods seem to have influenced the political writings of Calvin Coolidge, who was one of Morse's students at Amherst. Coolidge went on to become the 30th president of the United States. The notes cover a number of topics that one would associate with a survey course of European History - the Reformation, continental Europe in the Middle Ages, the French Revolution, etc. In addition to lecture notes, Hardy also made notes from various assigned readings. This notebook is an excellent window into the teaching of History at one of the highest-rank liberal arts colleges in the United States. For a historian, it provides a clear benchmark to compare differences (and similarities) in such a curriculum.
