Original publisher's black cloth binding with red lettering on covers and spine. 5 1/4" x 7 1/2." 197 pages, complete. Ten additional pages of advertisements in the back. Small square sticker on front pastedown with a library call number. A few numbers are written in black ink on the blank flyleaf preceding the half-title. There is one pink stamp on the title page that reads, "Library, State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, and the Blind, Berkeley, Cal." The stamp does not affect text. Tipped-in pocket label on the back pastedown lists the terms of checking out books from the library and instructs patrons to place their cards in the pocket when the book in on loan. A card is included in this pocket. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Some dust on the top edge of the text block not affecting pages internally. No external markings, except for some rubbing. Possible fading to the covers. A Near Fine copy. This book is part of a thirty-six-volume biographical series titled, English Men of Letters, which was edited by John Morley and written by different authors. This book is no. 19 of 36 in the series. One ad in the back lists other books in the series that had been released to date. Biography of Robert Southey (1774-1843), an English poet who was part of the Romanticist movement in literature. Southey became Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1813. He is also noted for creating the original version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.. Book.
