Norman Douglas (1868-1952) was a British writer of travel books but is best-known for this novel, South Wind, which was first published in 1917 and a response to WWI. The book is satirical in tone and takes place on the fictional Mediterranean island of Nepenthe (based off of the real island of Capri in Italy), as it addresses subject matter relating to religion, morality, philosophy, and hedonism. John Austen (1886-1948) was an English book illustrator whose artwork follows the Art Deco and Decadence movements, the latter of which is seen in this book's illustrations. Austen's illustrations appear to complement the tone of the novel, as many Decadent artworks carry a satirical perspective of human nature.. Illustr.: Austen, John. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
